How to Look After your Linen Sustainably

How to look after your linen sustainably

Earth Month is the perfect time to reassess how we care for the things we use every day—like our bed and bath linens. Sustainability isn’t just about what you buy, but also how you look after it. Caring for your linens doesn’t just help them last longer—it also helps the planet. With just a few mindful tweaks, you can extend the life of your linens while being kinder to the planet. Here’s how:

1. Wash at Lower Temperatures

Most modern detergents are designed to work just as well at 30°C as they do at 60°C. Washing at lower temperatures reduces energy usage, protects fabric fibres, and keeps your linens looking newer for longer.

2. Air Dry When Possible

Tumble dryers consume a lot of energy and can shorten the lifespan of your towels and bedding. If you can,  consider drying your bedding and towels outdoors on a line or on an indoor drying rack. Not only is this gentler on fabrics, but natural sunlight acts as a gentle disinfectant and brightener.

Did you know? Most towels on the retail market are only made to withstand 20 washes. Vision’s products utilise our hospitality expertise to create more durable products that can last twice as long!

3. Use Gentle, Eco-Friendly Detergents

Harsh chemicals can damage natural fibres over time. Choose biodegradable detergents that are free from phosphates and optical brighteners. Look for plant-based formulas to reduce the impact on water systems.

4. Skip the Fabric Softener

Fabric softeners often contain silicones that make fabrics feel soft temporarily but as they coat the fibres, it actually makes them less absorbent over time, a major issue for towels. Instead, a splash of white vinegar in the rinse cycle works wonders as a natural alternative.

5. Wash Full Loads

Maximise your washing machine’s efficiency by only washing full loads. This reduces water and energy use and makes each wash cycle count.

By caring for your linens the sustainable way, you’re extending their lifespan, saving energy, and helping to reduce textile waste. It’s a win for your home and a win for the planet.

6. Repair, Don’t Replace

Loose threads or small tears? Repairing them promptly can add months—or even years—to the life of your linens. A small act with a big impact.

By making these small, sustainable adjustments to your laundry habits, you’re not only prolonging the life of your linens—you’re also reducing waste, saving energy, and having a positive impact on the world around you.
